Corporate Tax Manager – About The Role
Technology is the central theme of this role, with clients operating across software, SaaS, fintech, digital media and other innovation-led sectors. You will help business owners navigate tax matters at different stages of their development, from securing investment and claiming available reliefs through to international expansion, restructuring and exit planning.
Alongside your own client work, you will play a part in establishing the firm's position in this market. That means working with senior colleagues to develop services, building connections with investors and professional advisers, and identifying ways to turn the team's technical expertise into new client relationships.
Key responsibilities:
- Advise business owners, founders and investors on corporate tax matters arising as their businesses develop, raise funding and enter new markets.
- Help shape and expand the firm's technology tax services, including the development of service offerings, pricing and new client relationships.
- Lead advisory assignments involving business sales, acquisitions, investment rounds, group reorganisations, management buyouts and succession planning.
- Support clients with the tax implications of international growth, including overseas subsidiaries, permanent establishment exposure, transfer pricing and internationally mobile workers.
- Assess eligibility for R&D tax relief and oversee claims, from identifying qualifying expenditure to preparing supporting technical information and dealing with HMRC enquiries.
- Advise on tax-efficient treatment of software development expenditure, intangible assets, Patent Box claims, capital allowances and the use of losses.
- Guide companies and investors through SEIS/EIS requirements and employee share arrangements, including EMI and growth shares.
- Take responsibility for complex corporation tax compliance, reviewing work prepared by colleagues and completing computations for more involved businesses and groups.
- Oversee relevant compliance requirements, including quarterly instalment payments, ATED returns and relief declarations.
- Develop external relationships across the technology sector, including with venture capital firms, accelerators, banks, lawyers and other professional advisers.
- Represent the firm in client meetings, proposals, networking activities and sector events, helping build its profile and generate new work.
- Work with colleagues across accounts, audit and corporate finance to coordinate advice and identify further ways to support clients.
- Keep clients informed of relevant legislative changes and translate technical developments into practical recommendations.
- Provide technical guidance to junior colleagues, helping develop their knowledge of corporate tax and the technology sector.
- Maintain oversight of assignment quality, budgets and deadlines, ensuring advice and reports are commercially relevant and clearly presented.
The successful Corporate Tax Manager will have:
- Substantial UK tax practice experience, including at least three years since qualification or equivalent experience.
- CTA, ACA or ACCA qualification, with CTA particularly relevant to the advisory focus.
- A sound corporate tax background and experience dealing with complex client requirements.
- Practical experience of R&D tax relief, ideally under the current regime.
- Knowledge of some of the tax considerations affecting innovative and investor-backed businesses, such as Patent Box, SEIS/EIS, share incentives or tax losses.
- The ability to assess commercial situations and explain technical issues clearly to business owners and other non-tax specialists.
- Confidence managing client relationships and taking responsibility for assignments from initial discussions through to delivery.
- An interest in developing a specialist area of work, building a network and contributing to business growth.
- Strong organisation, communication and judgement, with the ability to balance multiple deadlines without compromising quality.
- A collaborative approach to working with colleagues and developing less experienced members of the team.
